Germany chasing triple crown

Germany have the opportunity to complete a unique treble at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship. With the U17 and U19 titles already in their possession, Germany would become the first nation to hold all three age-group trophies at the same time should Horst Hrubesch's side win two more ties in Sweden.

Famous first
No team has ever managed that, with Italy coming the closest having claimed the U21 trophy in 1996, a year after a defeat by Spain in the U16 final. The Azzurrini were also beaten by the Republic of Ireland in the U18 showpiece in 1998, three weeks before that year's U21 event. Although Germany will relinquish their hold on the U19 competition – secured with a 3-1 defeat of Italy in the Czech Republic last July – within a matter of weeks, having not qualified for this year's finals in Ukraine which kick off on 21 July, they won the U17 crown on home soil at the start of May, defeating the Netherlands 2-1 in front of more than 20,000 spectators in Magdeburg. So can they add the U21 title to their trophy cabinet – and where do they need to improve to claim the treble?
