The desire to take home a piece of UEFA EURO 2008™ shows no sign of abating as supporters continue to snap up official tournament souvenirs.
Big spender
Stephan Ullmann, a 34-year-old venue manager, is responsible for the 700m² official EURO superstore in Basel, run by Intersport. He has witnessed first hand the excitement the finals can create. "One Russian fan bought 30 original EUROPASS balls, just as many Russian jerseys, hats and scarves for about 10,000 CHF [about Є6,000]," he said.
Dutch purchases
The first customer through the doors was also lavish in his spending too. A Japanese journalist parted with nearly 1,000 CHF (about Є600) on souvenirs to take back home. While Russia supporters were the biggest spenders, Ullmann also paid tribute to fans of the Netherlands. Many of the estimated 150,000 Oranje followers who came to Basel wanted their own piece of the tournament to take away with them – bizarrely most of the shopping coming after their team's defeat by Russia.
