The central defenders category is always one of the toughest in the Team of the Year poll and this year is no exception with previous winners John Terry, Ricardo Carvalho and Carles Puyol all nominated again. Manchester United FC pair Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidić will be among the favourites while Jamie Carragher is in the mix once more. There is no room for previous winners Alessandro Nesta or Fabio Cannavaro but Italy's newest defensive prodigy Giorgio Chiellini is nominated as is hardy Czech Republic captain Tomáš Ujfaluši.
